Leitz was founded in 1849 and traces back its origins to Wetzlar Germany. Initially focused on manufacturing telescopes, Leitz shifted its attention with time to the production of microscopes and even microtomes. In 1990, it merged with the Cambridge Instrument Company under the new name of Leica Holding B.V.
